Sock Mug Shots

When my dad notices I haven’t blogged in awhile and calls me to see if I’m okay, then I know it’s been too long since I planted my butt in the computer chair.
I’ve been trying to figure out the Grand Mystery Of Sock Knitting lately. My first pair were toe-ups, using Mountain Colors 4/8’s yarn in Bitterroot Rainbow. Nice fit, but when the socks are off my feet, they look odd (like my feet).

I decided to make my second pair cuff-down. I used Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sport, color 92 River, blues & purples below. I have to admit that I was seduced by the colors, and since I don’t care if my socks match, I had great fun watching the colors unfold in their own way.
I had a problem with the fit until I frogged the droopy stockinette ankle and replaced it with 2×2 ribbing, which I continued down the foot. I don’t think I want to do that again, though – it’s a lot of ribbing, and it exacerbated my chronic arm pain.

After getting some advice from the wonderful knitters on the Knitter’s Review forum, I have begun my third pair of socks. I’m back to worsted weight because I wear the socks around the house, and the lovely sportweight socks I just completed are too cold now that autumn has rather suddenly leaped upon us here in the Rockies. So I’ll have to trade durability for warmth, I guess. (Those toasty Fiber Trends clogs are looking more and more attractive.)
Tomorrow I’m off to a writers’ conference for the weekend.

Very nice socks. I love the colors. I am also knitting a pair of socks that look weird when they are off the foot.
